Life in Summerlin

A brief history

Summerlin is named after Jean Amelia Summerlin, grandmother of airplane designer and land developer Howard Hughes, who first purchased the land in the 1950s. In 1988, the Summa Corporation (later renamed the Howard Hughes Corporation) announced plans to develop the land into a master-planned community, trading 5,000 acres of environmentally sensitive land near Red Rock Canyon for a 3,000 acre tract that’s more suitable for residential development.

Summerlin’s development came at a steady, measured pace, with institutions like The Meadows School and infrastructures like the Summerlin Parkway paving the way for the development of The Hills, its first residential village, and The Pueblo afterwards.
